Making a call using Voices across Birmingham – freephone 0800 121 4412

Making a call

To make a call using the Voices across Birmingham system you need to do the following:

  1. Dial the Voices across Birmingham freephone number 0800 121 4412 (note, this is not the same as the registration freephone number)
  2. You will hear the prompt “Thank you for taking part in the Voices across Birmingham project.  Please enter your PIN number”.  Enter your PIN number using the buttons on your phone.  It’s important that you do this carefully because your PIN number tells us who to pay for the call.  If you enter the wrong PIN number you may still be able to make the call but you will not be paid.
  3. If the system recognises your PIN number, you will hear the prompt “Thank you, you may now make your call”.  Enter the number that you want to call as normal, using the buttons on your phone.  You must enter the complete number, including the area code.
  4. You will hear the usual dialling tone
  5. When you are connected, please remember to confirm that the person that you are talking to gives permission for the call to be recorded.  Without this permission we will delete the call and you will not be paid for that call.
  6. When you have completed your call, just end the call as normal.

The calls will be recorded and stored anonymously on a computer – the caller will be identified only by the PIN number and no personal details will be included.  Each call will be transcribed – a person will listen to the recording and type exactly what is said.  The recordings plus the transcriptions will be used by researchers in universities and companies to develop better computer systems that can recognise human speech.
